Serian Substation Project to Enhance Power Supply Reliability and Support Future Development

SERIAN
28 JULY 2026

The new Serian Substation will strengthen the electricity network serving the Serian Division by providing additional capacity to meet growing demand and support the area’s continued development.

The project was highlighted during a working visit to Serian by Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak, The Honourable Dato Sri Haji Julaihi Narawi. During the visit, the Minister was briefed by Sarawak Energy on the project's progress and the improvements it is expected to bring to the local electricity network.

Construction of the Serian 275/(132)/33 kV Substation commenced on 1 December 2025, with completion and commissioning targeted for the second half of 2028. As of June 2026, the project was 12% complete and progressing according to schedule.

Upon completion, the substation will enable additional electricity to be supplied from the main grid to meet existing and future demand in areas such as Serian, Tebedu and Gedong.

Sarawak Energy’s team, led by Yusri Safri, Chief Executive Officer of Syarikat SESCO Berhad, briefed the minister on how the project is also expected to improve power quality, address existing low-voltage conditions and reduce the risk of supply interruptions, contributing to more reliable electricity supply across the affected areas.

The additional capacity will support the development under the Serian Masterplan as well as upcoming state and federal projects in the area. It will also help ensure the electricity network is equipped to support the Division’s longer-term growth, including plans to develop the area as a tourism destination.

The Serian Substation project is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen electricity infrastructure and ensure sufficient capacity to meet the needs of communities and future development across Sarawak. The Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication, together with Sarawak Energy, will continue to work together to improve supply reliability and enhance network resilience across the state.

During the visit, the Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak, The Honourable Dato Sri Haji Julaihi Narawi, was briefed by Sarawak Energy on the project's progress and the improvements it is expected to bring to the local electricity network. Also in attendance were The Honourable Datuk Liwan Lagang, Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication; The Honourable Datuk Haji Ibrahim Haji Baki, Deputy Minister for Utility (Sarawak Energy & PETROS) and Chairman for Sarawak Energy; The Honourable Datuk Martin Ben, Deputy Minister of Food Industry, Commodity & Regional Development (Commodity & Regional Development); and The Honourable John Ilus, Assemblyman for Bukit Semuja.
