Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on e-Invoice

1. About e-Invoice

An e-Invoice is a digital representation of a transaction between a supplier and a buyer. It replaces paper-based or electronic documents such as invoices, credit notes and debit notes, while containing the same essential information. This includes supplier and buyer details, item descriptions, quantities, prices excluding tax, applicable taxes and total amounts. e-Invoices record transaction data for daily business operations.

The Malaysian Government plans to implement e-invoicing domestically in line with the Twelfth Malaysia Plan's focus on strengthening digital services infrastructure and modernising tax administration.

The Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (IRBM) has announced that e-Invoicing will be implemented in phases starting from 1 August 2024.

2. Why is e-Invoice being implemented in Malaysia?

The implementation of e-Invoicing aims to drive economic growth, modernise administrative processes and enhance international competitiveness.

Through this transition, the Malaysian Government seeks to:

  • Eliminate paper-based invoicing to mitigate tax leakage
  • Assist businesses in conserving time and resources related to tax compliance
  • Improve the ease of conducting business for entities engaged in international trade

3. I received an email or notice from Sarawak Energy requesting customer profile information for e-Invoice. Is this genuine?

Yes. This is an official communication from Sarawak Energy.

5. What information is required for the profile?

  • For individuals: Full name, Identification Card or Passport Number, Tax Identification Number (TIN), email address and mobile number
  • For businesses: Registered business name, Business Registration Number (BRN), Tax Identification Number (TIN), email address and mobile number
  • Additional information for businesses, if applicable: Sales Tax Registration Number, Services Tax Registration Number, Sales Tax Exemption Certification Number/Special Exemption (as per gazette orders)

For Domestic category registrations, please submit the BE form containing the Identification Card or Passport Number and Tax Identification Number (TIN) only for verification.

For Commercial and Industrial tariff accounts, please provide Form C or any equivalent document showing the Tax Identification Number (TIN) and Business Registration Number (BRN) only for verification.

6. What if I do not have a Tax Identification Number (TIN)?

A Tax Identification Number (TIN) is required only for individuals who are registered taxpayers. If you do not have a TIN, you may proceed by submitting the remaining required information through the official channels, including the Sarawak Energy Cares mobile app or web portal, by visiting the nearest Sarawak Energy Customer Service counter, or by emailing customercare@sarawakenergy.com.

7. What if my passport is expiring soon?

Please ensure your passport remains valid for at least six (6) months. Passports expiring within six (6) months should be renewed promptly and the new passport details should be used for registration

8. If the contract account or premises is not registered under my name, how should I provide the required profile information? For example, my account is still registered under the previous owner/late family member, etc.

If your electricity contract account name differs due to the following circumstances:

  • You have recently purchased the property from someone else
  • The property is no longer jointly occupied and the electricity account remains registered under another party's name
  • (For businesses) there has been a transfer or restructuring of business ownership requiring the account to reflect a new legal entity

Please request a Change of Name for the electricity account before updating your details for e-Invoicing.

However, if you have inherited a property and the account remains under the deceased person's name, you are required to terminate the existing electricity account and apply for a new account under your name.

If the electricity account is registered under your parents or spouse’s name, you may assist in updating their information for the e-Invoice issuance. Should you wish to receive the e-Invoice under your own name, a Change of Name is required.

10. What should I do if the Contract Account name does not match the Business Registration Number (BRN) or Tax Identification Number (TIN)?

If there is a mismatch, please take the following steps:

  • Visit the nearest Sarawak Energy Customer Service counter or log in to SEB cares mobile app or web portal
  • Request a Change of Name to align the Contract Account name with the Business Registration Number (BRN) or Tax Identification Number (TIN)

11. If I have multiple contract account numbers under one Business Registration Number (BRN), how should I submit the profile information?

Each successful submission via SEB cares applies to one (1) contract account only. Separate submissions are required for each contract account. Alternatively, you may contact Sarawak Energy’s Customer Care Centre or visit the nearest Customer Service counter for assistance.

12. What happens if I provide incorrect information during the e-Invoice update information process?

Sarawak Energy will not issue e-Invoices for submissions containing incorrect information. Please ensure all details provided are accurate.

To amend any incorrect submissions, please reach out to Sarawak Energy’s Customer Care Centre at 1300-88-3111 or e-mail customercare@sarawakenergy.com.
