Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) Berhad and Syarikat SESCO Berhad (SESCO) formalised a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to establish a dedicated connectivity route linking Limbang and Lawas, leveraging existing Sarawak communication infrastructure.

At present, telecommunications connectivity between Limbang and Lawas relies on routes that pass through neighbouring Brunei. Through this collaboration, a dedicated Sarawak-based connectivity route will be established between the two districts, providing a direct path that does not require transit through Brunei. This helps strengthen network resilience, service continuity and keeps power costs affordable for northern Sarawak.

This collaboration is supported by a Virtual Fibre Leasing Agreement that enables SDEC to leverage SESCO’s Virtual Fibre infrastructure to provide communication services supporting the expansion of rural telecommunications across Sarawak.

The Sarawak-based route will also provide direct control over the management, maintenance and future expansion of its telecommunications infrastructure between Limbang and Lawas, while enabling improved digital services for businesses, education, healthcare and local communities.

This initiative supports the aspirations of the Sarawak Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030) through the development of resilient, scalable, affordable and future-ready digital infrastructure, reinforcing Sarawak’s continued efforts to accelerate the transformation towards a high-income, innovation-driven digital economy.

The MoA was exchanged between Dato Ir. Ts. Sudarnoto Osman, Chief Executive Officer of SDEC; and Sim Ko Sin, Chief Digital Officer of Sarawak Energy, representing SESCO.

The exchange ceremony was witnessed by The Honourable Datuk Amar Haji Awang Tengah bin Ali Hasan, Deputy Premier of Sarawak and The Honourable Dato Sri Haji Julaihi bin Haji Narawi, Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak.

Also present were Members of Parliament and Members of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly for Limbang and Lawas; Board Members and senior leadership teams from SDEC and SESCO; representatives from the Limbang Resident Office, Limbang District Office, Lawas District Office, and other government agencies; as well as community leaders from both districts.
