Sarawak Energy Uncovers Illegal Power Connection Linked to Cryptocurrency Mining in Sibu House

SIBU
7 APRIL 2026

As part of its ongoing enforcement efforts to curb electricity theft, Sarawak Energy uncovered an illegal power connection used for a cryptocurrency mining operation at a double‑storey semi‑detached house on Jalan Laichee, Sibu.

The joint operation was carried out by the meter inspection team from Syarikat SESCO Berhad (SESCO), Sarawak Energy’s retail and operations arm, alongside the Sibu police. During the inspection, the team discovered direct tapping cables that bypassed the electricity meter and standard safety controls.

The illegal installation powered 12 cryptocurrency mining servers, resulting in unrecorded electricity consumption. All related mining equipment and modified cables were seized as evidence.

Police reports have been lodged and investigations are ongoing under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance. Those found guilty of power theft face fines of up to RM200,000, imprisonment of up to five years or both.

Cryptocurrency mining is an energy-intensive activity. When powered through unauthorised connections, it causes financial losses and creates safety hazards. The improper wiring arrangements found at the Sibu premises can lead to overheating, electrical faults and fires, endangering occupants and neighbouring properties.

Sarawak Energy maintains a firm stance on electricity theft and works closely with enforcement authorities and the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication (MUT) Sarawak to detect, deter and act against such offences, while raising awareness of the associated risks and legal consequences.

Property owners are advised to ensure that electricity accounts are transferred to their tenants’ names when leasing their premises. Landlordes must remain vigilant to avoid being held liable for unlawful electrical activities or power theft carried out on their properties.

Members of the public are encouraged to report suspicious activities related to electricity theft to Sarawak Energy’s Customer Care Centre at 1300‑88‑3111 or via email at customercare@sarawakenergy.com. All reports will be treated with strict confidentiality.
