Sarawak Energy was recognised for its environmental management and sustainable practices at the Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award (PMHA) 2024/2025. The PMHA is Malaysia’s leading environmental accolade for businesses and industries – recognising operational excellence and leadership in environmental sustainability.

At the awards ceremony held in Kuala Lumpur on 27 January, Sarawak Energy’s Bakun Hydroelectric Plant (HEP) received the Excellent Achievement in Environmental Performance award. The vertically integrated power utility and energy developer’s other facilities, Murum HEP and Sejingkat Power Corporation (SPC), were also recognised with the Exceptional Achievement Award in Environmental Performance, while Mukah Power Generation (MPG) received the Notable Achievement Award in Environmental Performance.

Sarawak Energy Group Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Haji Sharbini Suhaili, said the recognitions highlighted the company’s ongoing commitment to strengthening environmental management and sustainable practices across its operations.

“This is supported by structured governance frameworks and corporate-level environmental programmes, including circular economy initiatives, Go Green campaigns and biodiversity conservation activities, which guide how our facilities are planned, developed and operated.

“Sarawak Energy is also the first corporate body in Malaysia to commit to the United Nations Global Compact Network’s ‘Business Ambition for 1.5°C’ pledge, reflecting our efforts to limit global temperature rise and support long-term climate action. These practices are aligned with the Sarawak Government’s priorities on sustainable development, environmental protection and inclusive growth under the Sarawak Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030,” he said.

The ceremony was officiated by The Honourable Dato’ Sri Arthur Joseph Kurup, Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability. Sarawak Energy was represented by a delegation led by Vice President for Hydro Jonny Wong.

Introduced in 1996, the PMHA serves as a national benchmark for organisations to evaluate, strengthen and showcase their environmental performance. The award is jointly organised by the Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers and the Environmental Management and Research Association of Malaysia, with support from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability and the Department of Environment. PMHA 2024/2025 saw 81 companies from various sectors taking part, including energy, manufacturing, construction, oil & gas, hospitality and oil palm plantations.

The recognitions received by Sarawak Energy at PMHA 2024/2025 follow Bakun HEP’s recent international recognition for its hydropower sustainability performance. Malaysia’s largest renewable energy facility, the Bakun HEP has received Silver Certification under the Hydropower Sustainability Standard, highlighting its efforts in community engagement, biodiversity conservation, climate resilience and governance.

In September 2025, Bakun HEP was also awarded the International Hydropower Association’s (IHA) Blue Planet Prize. The award recognises the best-performing hydropower projects assessed between July 2023 and June 2025 that demonstrate outstanding sustainability performance under the Hydropower Sustainability Standard, covering environmental, governance and social topics.

Sarawak Energy is committed to certifying all its hydropower plants under international standards by 2030 and has been an active member of the International Hydropower Association since 2010.

As Malaysia’s largest renewable energy developer and the first South-East Asian global Patron of the World Energy Council, Sarawak Energy continues to support global energy transition efforts and contribute insights on energy policy, innovation and sustainability.
