A sustainability case study conducted by Sarawak Energy on climate action was recognised for demonstrating measurable progress aligned with the UN Global Compact’s Forward Faster priorities and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) at the Forward Faster Sustainability Awards 2026 on 29 January.

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) impact case study, titled ‘Leading Malaysia’s Climate Transition: Sarawak Energy’s Journey to Science Based Targets Validation’, received an award in the large corporation category.

Hajah Siti Aisah Adenan, Sarawak Energy’s Senior Vice President for Corporate Services, accepted the award in the presence of The Right Honourable Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Haji Openg, Premier of Sarawak, who was the guest of honour at the ceremony.

Sarawak Energy Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Haji Sharbini Suhaili said the recognition reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to strengthen climate action governance, enhance accountability and align with global sustainability standards.

“For Sarawak Energy, a key focus has been to strengthen our sustainability credentials by adopting science-based methodologies with third-party validation, so we can keep ourselves in check in terms of governance, compliance and alignment with global sustainability requirements. These credentials are crucial for building trust, driving long-term value creation and strengthening risk management.”

“Since 2010, Sarawak Energy has intensified efforts to reduce emissions in our operations and improve sustainability performance. We successfully decarbonised our power systems by more than 70% by harnessing hydropower resources, secured a global sustainability standard certification for the Bakun Hydroelectricity Plant, established a pool of sustainability assessors and developed internal frameworks to guide our team. This recognition by UN Global Compact Network Malaysia & Brunei (UNGCMYB) reflects our progress in turning sustainability from intention into real impact,” he said.

Meanwhile, Hajah Siti Aisah said the award reflects the company’s continued commitment to embedding international standards and best practices into its business operations, as it works toward becoming a regional sustainability leader.

“We thank UNGCMYB for being our partner in advocating and championing sustainability principles and practices as an integral part of the way we do business. We are proud to be part of a corporate community that actively cultivates sustainable business practices.”

“Sarawak Energy’s Sustainability Strategy & Roadmap are reviewed periodically, alongside the development of a Corporate Decarbonisation Plan. The company also conducts corporate-wide briefings on 1.5°C & Net Zero Awareness, Climate Mitigation & Adaptation and Corporate Climate Change Impacts. Sarawak Energy wants to embed sustainability practices into everyday decision-making and not treat it as an add-on,” she said.

At the same ceremony, The Right Honourable Premier of Sarawak, who is also the Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Sarawak (MEESty), received the event’s highest accolade, the ‘Forward Faster Sustainability Visionary Award 2026’, while The Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Sarawak received the ‘Forward Faster Sustainability Nexus Award 2026’.

The awards operate on a 50/50 judging model, combining public voting and evaluation by an Independent Judging Panel.

UNGCMYB is the Malaysia and Brunei Chapter of the United Nations Global Compact, which advocates for business sustainability in both countries. Sarawak Energy has been a member of the UN Global Compact since 2016.
