Sarawak Energy, in collaboration with Sarawak Forestry Corporation, planted 300 native tree seedlings at Piasau Nature Reserve on 8 February 2026, reinforcing the company’s long-term commitment to environmental sustainability and biodiversity conservation across Sarawak.
This event is part of Sarawak Energy’s Tree Planting, Protection and Habitat Restoration Campaign, which aims to plant and protect 500,000 trees by 2030. The initiative also aligns with the company’s goal to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goal No. 13 (Climate Action) and Goal No. 15 (Life on Land).
About 30 Sarawak Energy senior leaders and employees participated in the programme, which was led by Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Haji Sharbini Suhaili.
Datuk Haji Sharbini said such initiatives support Sarawak Energy’s commitment to ensuring that renewable energy development proceeds with due care for ecosystems and biodiversity.
“This initiative reflects our responsibility to ensure that environmental stewardship remains integral to Sarawak Energy’s growth journey. Through sustained reforestation and habitat restoration efforts, we aim to contribute meaningfully to the preservation of Sarawak’s rich natural heritage for future generations,” he said.
The seedlings planted during the activity comprised native species including Kara (Ficus variegata), Cempedak (Artocarpus integer), Terap (Artocarpus odoratissimus), Kasai (Pometia pinnata) and Pulur (Aglaia), selected to support ecological restoration and enhance habitat diversity within the reserve.
Located in Miri, Piasau Nature Reserve is an important urban sanctuary known for its hornbill population. The planting contributes to strengthening urban biodiversity and supporting ongoing conservation efforts within a rapidly developing area.
Participants also visited the reserve’s visitor centre, where they were briefed on ongoing reforestation and conservation initiatives, including efforts to protect and rehabilitate hornbill habitats.
As of 26 December 2025, Sarawak Energy has planted more than 247,000 trees statewide
under its own campaign. This includes over 58,000 trees planted in 2025 alone, progressing towards its target of planting 500,000 trees by 2030.
The campaign reflects Sarawak Energy’s broader commitment to balancing energy development with environmental responsibility, in line with Sarawak’s sustainable growth aspirations.
