Students and teachers at SMK Medamit in Limbang now have better access to hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) learning following the launch of a new STEM Hub by Sarawak Energy and Lighthouse of Hope Sarawak (LOHS).

The SMK Medamit STEM Hub is the fifth hub established under a two-year collaboration between Sarawak Energy and LOHS to expand access to STEM education in rural communities across the State.

Sarawak Energy’s Senior Vice President for Corporate Services, Marconi Madai said the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to supporting education and youth development, particularly among students in rural communities.

“STEM education plays an important role in preparing young Sarawakians for the future. Through this collaboration, we hope to provide students with greater exposure to technology and practical problem-solving while supporting teachers in delivering more interactive learning. This also supports Sarawak’s aspiration to nurture a skilled and future-ready workforce, especially among young people in rural communities,” said Marconi when officiating the launch on 10 July 2026.

He said the establishment of the STEM Hub was a positive development for Limbang as it would give students in the area access to practical learning opportunities that could support their ambitions in science, technology and innovation. He also encouraged students to make full use of the facilities and programmes available through the hub.

“The next major discovery could come from one of you. You could become an inventor, an engineer developing new energy solutions, or a technopreneur turning an idea into an innovation that benefits society,” he added.

Lighthouse of Hope Sarawak CEO, Dr. Lee Chee San, expressed his heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to Sarawak Energy for its invaluable partnership and unwavering support in advancing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education across Sarawak.

"This collaboration demonstrates how strong partnerships between corporate organisations and community-based organisations can create meaningful and lasting social impact. By working together, we hope to inspire more students to pursue STEM education and consider STEM-related careers, contributing to the development of a future-ready workforce for Sarawak," said Dr. Lee.

The STEM Hub is equipped with learning resources for robotics, drones, solar energy, coding, 3D printing and laser printing. The facilities are intended to make STEM learning more practical and encourage students to consider further studies and careers in related fields.

Extending beyond the provision of equipment, the collaboration enables students and teachers to receive ongoing support through the STEM Ambassador Programme, besides workshops and roadshows involving neighbouring schools and communities.

Under the STEM Ambassador Programme, selected students will be trained to lead peer learning activities and support the use of the hub within their schools. The programme aims to build their confidence and leadership skills while encouraging greater interest in STEM among their peers.

Teachers will also take part in dedicated workshops to strengthen their ability to deliver project-based STEM education. Students will be guided in using the equipment to develop their own projects, giving them exposure to technical skills and problem solving.

The SMK Medamit STEM Hub follows the establishment of STEM Hubs at SMK Long Lama, SMK Lubok Antu, SMK Bakun and SMK Baleh since the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between Sarawak Energy and LOHS on 26 March 2025.

The launch event of the STEM Hub on 10 July 2026 included the signing of a Community Cooperation Note between SMK Medamit and LOHS. SMK Medamit was represented by Principal Linda Liau, while LOHS was represented by its Chief Executive Officer, Dr Lee Chee San.

The signing was witnessed by Limbang District Education Officer Siti Mariam binti Salleh, LOHS Head of STEM Dr Hwa Tee Yong and STEM Specialists Eng Guan Huch and Cheah Swee Hock.

Also present were Sarawak Energy’s General Manager for Sustainability Mohamad Irwan Aman and Senior Manager for Social Investment & Planning, Nur Hazwani Sapuan.
