Responsible Energy Use Encouraged Amid El Niño Conditions
KUCHING

Responsible and efficient energy use is encouraged as warmer and drier conditions associated with the El Niño phenomenon continue across the region. Higher temperatures typically result in increased electricity usage, particularly for cooling, making proactive energy management important for all households to better manage electricity consumption and costs during periods of high demand.
Sarawak continues to offer one of the most competitive electricity tariffs in Southeast Asia, enabling customers to enjoy reliable and affordable power. At the same time, prudent energy use contributes to overall system efficiency, complementing ongoing system operations and long-term planning to maintain a dependable electricity supply across the state.
Energy use can be optimised through a number of simple measures. These include setting air-conditioners to about 24°C while keeping doors and windows closed and making use of fans or natural ventilation where appropriate to reduce reliance on air-conditioning. Switching off lights and appliances when not in use, adopting energy-efficient appliances such as LED lighting and using curtains or blinds to reduce heat gain during the hottest parts of the day can further reduce unnecessary consumption.
Long-term efficiency can be supported through the adoption of energy-conscious habits, such as adjusting usage based on room occupancy, monitoring electricity consumption regularly and scheduling heavy appliance use outside peak periods. The collective uptake of these practices across households and workplaces contributes to more effective energy management at the community level.
Customers with smart meters may also make use of Sarawak Energy’s mobile app, SEB cares, or the web portal to better manage energy use. The Energy Insights feature available on both platforms allows electricity consumption to be tracked on an hourly, daily and monthly basis.
With the increased use of electrical appliances during warmer weather, maintaining electrical safety is equally essential. Measures such as avoiding the overloading of power sockets, ensuring wiring is in safe working condition and positioning appliances such as refrigerators away from heat sources can support safe and efficient operation. Electrical installations or repairs should be carried out by qualified personnel, using only certified and approved products.
Sarawak Energy continues to support sustainable energy practices while providing reliable, affordable and renewable energy.
