Record Participation at Sarawak Energy Marathon 2026 as Event Raises RM480,000 for Charity

More than 8,500 runners from across Malaysia and 16 other countries gathered in Kuching on Sunday (9 August) for the Sarawak Energy Marathon 2026, the largest edition of the event since its inception in 2013, raising RM480,000 through race registrations for charitable organisations across Sarawak.

A record 8,535 participants registered for the Sarawak Energy Marathon 2026 across four race categories, comprising the 42.195km Full Marathon, 21km Half Marathon, 10km Competitive Run and 5km Fun Run. The 21km and 42km courses were certified by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), meeting internationally recognised race standards.

This year's event also attracted 83 international runners from 16 countries. Brunei, Kenya, Singapore and Indonesia had the largest contingents, while Italy and South Korea were represented for the first time.

Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak, The Honourable Dato Sri Haji Julaihi Haji Narawi, officiated the event and reaffirmed the importance of community participation and shared responsibility.

“As Sarawak’s primary electricity provider and Malaysia’s largest renewable hydropower developer, Sarawak Energy has an important responsibility not only to deliver safe and reliable electricity, but also to contribute positively to the wellbeing and development of Sarawak,” he said.

He also called on the public to help protect essential infrastructure by reporting cable theft, vandalism and tampering, while acknowledging the dedication of Sarawak Energy employees in ensuring a safe and reliable electricity supply.

The Honourable Datuk Haji Ibrahim Haji Baki, Deputy Minister for Utility (Sarawak Energy and PETROS) and Chairman of Sarawak Energy, said the record participation reflected the continued growth of the Marathon and its potential to attract an increasingly diverse field of runners.

"It is encouraging to see how the Marathon has grown continue to grow over the years. We hope it will continue to bring and communities together while showcasing Sarawak as a welcoming destination for runners from Malaysia and around the world,” he said.

Sarawak Energy Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Haji Sharbini Suhaili said the event had entered a new chapter following its transition from the Sarawak Energy Isthmus Run to the Sarawak Energy Marathon.

“This year’s edition is our biggest yet since the event began in 2013 as the Isthmus Run. The 45% increase in participation compared with 2025 reflects the vibrant running community we are building together,” he said.

Sharbini, who is also Chairman of the Sarawak Energy Employee’s Recreation Club, said the organisation remained committed to delivering a world-class race while creating a positive impact for the community.

“With the 21km and 42km courses certified by AIMS, runners can be confident that their achievements have been recorded on globally recognised courses. Beyond the race, RM480,000 has been raised through registrations for 16 charitable organisations across Sarawak, with each receiving RM30,000. Every kilometre completed represents not only a personal achievement, but also a contribution towards supporting communities in need,” he said.

He also expressed appreciation to government agencies, sponsors, venue and hotel partners, volunteers, medical and safety personnel, and the local community for making the event a success.

The Sarawak Energy Marathon 2026 featured a total cash prize pool of RM201,500 across all race categories, in addition to lucky draw prizes and a vibrant race village featuring sponsor booths, food and beverage vendors, community partners and family-friendly activities.

Held annually on the second Sunday of August, the Sarawak Energy Marathon will return on 8 August 2027. Sarawak Energy congratulates all participants on their achievements and looks forward to welcoming runners back next year.
