Minister Reviews Progress of Electricity Supply Upgrade in Samarahan Division
SEBUYAU
19 JULY 2026
Minister of Utility and Telecommunication, The Honourable Dato Sri Haji Julaihi Haji Narawi, today reviewed the progress of a Sarawak Government-funded electricity supply upgrade aimed at improving supply reliability, strengthening network resilience and supporting future growth in the Samarahan Division.
During a working visit to Sebuyau, The Honourable Dato Sri Haji Julaihi was briefed on the project, which is being implemented by Sarawak Energy and includes the installation of more than 120km of Medium Voltage Covered Conductor (MVCC) lines.
The upgraded network will serve communities in Asajaya, Sadong Jaya, Sebuyau, Simunjan and Gedong. The project also includes a 1.8 km submarine cable across the Batang Sadong river, 63 km of fibre optic cable and line reorganisation.
The new MVCC and fibre optic links will connect Asajaya to the proposed Sebuyau 33/11kV Substation. Once operational, the substation will help strengthen supply capacity and network flexibility in Sebuyau and surrounding areas.
Unlike conventional bare conductors, which are exposed power lines, MVCC lines have a protective covering that helps them withstand brief contact with vegetation or wildlife. This reduces the risk of faults and unplanned supply interruptions.
The upgraded network will allow electricity supply to be rerouted during maintenance or unexpected outages. The fibre optic infrastructure will improve network monitoring, while the upgraded lines and equipment will provide additional capacity to meet growing electricity demand.
Upon completion, communities across the Samarahan Division are expected to benefit from more reliable electricity supply and a stronger, more flexible network that can support the division’s continued development.
This initiative supports Sarawak Energy’s ongoing efforts to modernise Sarawak's electricity network while supporting the Sarawak Government's commitment to providing reliable, safe and electricity supply to communities throughout the state.
