Northern Sarawak has reached another significant milestone in its energy infrastructure development with the integration of Limbang into the Sarawak Grid, strengthening electricity supply reliability.

The integration was achieved following the successful commissioning of the Limbang Town 275kV Extra High Voltage (EHV) Substation and the energisation of the Bunut-Medamit-Limbang 275kV transmission line on 31 July 2026.

The project comprises approximately 228 kilometres of 275kV transmission lines supported by 644 transmission towers and monopoles, extending from Bunut through Medamit to the new Limbang Town EHV Substation.

Following the completion of distribution cable diversion works, the entire Limbang distribution network is now supplied through the Sarawak Grid. As a result, Limbang Power Station has been placed on standby and will remain available to provide backup support to the electricity supply system if required.

Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak, The Honourable Dato Sri Haji Julaihi Narawi congratulated Sarawak Energy on this achievement, describing it as another important milestone in strengthening Sarawak's electricity infrastructure and delivering long-term benefits to the people.

"The successful integration of Limbang into the Sarawak Grid reflects the Sarawak Government's continued commitment to ensuring that all Sarawakians have access to reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity supply.

"I commend Sarawak Energy and everyone involved in delivering this project. This achievement is the result of careful planning, strong collaboration and the dedication of all parties in turning this important infrastructure project into reality," he said.

Chairman of Sarawak Energy, The Honourable Datuk Haji Ibrahim Haji Baki said, "Limbang had previously relied on an isolated diesel-based electricity system. With its connection to the Sarawak Grid, the division now receives electricity from Sarawak's predominantly hydropower-based generation mix, significantly improving supply reliability and operational flexibility.

"The integration also reduces dependence on diesel generation, lowering carbon emissions and improving environmental sustainability while creating greater opportunities to extend reliable electricity supply to rural villages in Batu Danau and Ulu Medamit in the future.

"It also builds on the successful commissioning of the Lawas 275kV Substation and transmission infrastructure in November 2025, which integrated the Lawas network into the Sarawak Grid and established the Sarawak-Sabah Interconnection,” added Datuk Haji Ibrahim, who is also the Sarawak Deputy Minister for Utility (Sarawak Energy and PETROS).

Together, these projects complete the integration of Northern Sarawak into the state’s main transmission network, strengthening overall grid resilience and enabling more efficient system operations. At the same time, the Sarawak-Sabah Interconnection extends the benefits of this strengthened network beyond Sarawak by enabling cross-border electricity exchange.

This makes the interconnection an important building block towards the future Borneo Grid, translating the concept of regional electricity connectivity into practical implementation while supporting Malaysia’s broader aspirations under the ASEAN Power Grid initiative.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Energy Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Haji Sharbini Suhaili said, “With Northern Sarawak now fully connected to the Sarawak Grid, the strengthened interconnected transmission network enhances electricity supply reliability across Lawas and Limbang while providing a strong platform to support future economic development and growing electricity demand, reinforcing Sarawak Energy's commitment to delivering reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity to communities throughout Sarawak.”
