Commencement of Bakun–Murum Junction 3rd and 4th Circuit 275kV Transmission Line Project Marks Key Milestone in Strengthening Grid Resilience

Sarawak Energy’s efforts to ensure a reliable and stable power supply for Sarawak reached a key milestone with the officiation of the Bakun-Murum Junction 3rd and 4th Circuit 275kV Transmission Line Project. This critical investment strengthens grid resilience and supports reliable system operations, ensuring a more secure and consistent energy supply for local households and industries.

To commemorate the milestone, a Pela Daleh ceremony was held on 29 April at the Murum Junction Substation in Simpang Urun, organised by the Belaga District Office in collaboration with Sarawak Energy. The Pela Daleh is a traditional blessing ceremony practised by Orang Ulu communities in Sarawak, particularly among the Kayan and Kenyah in the upper Rajang, to ensure works are carried out harmoniously, safely and successfully. The observance aligns with local customs and highlights the importance of integrating cultural heritage considerations into project development.

The event was officiated by The Honourable Datuk Liwan Lagang, Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication (Telecommunication) and attended by The Honourable Kennedy Chukpai Ugon, Murum Assemblyman; Elvis Didit, Kapit Resident; Ir. Bunyak Lunyong, Chief Executive Officer of SEB Power, Sarawak Energy; and Bidah Lujah, Belaga District Officer. Also present were representatives from the Belaga District Office, government agencies and community leaders.

Speaking at the event, Ir. Bunyak said, “The Bakun-Murum Junction 3rd and 4th Circuit Transmission Line Project is an important step in strengthening grid resilience and supporting reliable electricity supply in Sarawak. At the same time, the observance of the Pela Daleh ceremony reflects the importance of engaging closely with local communities and respecting their customs. This is in line with Sarawak Energy’s focus on culture and heritage preservation under our social investment efforts, including ongoing collaboration with local communities in areas such as traditional crafts, cultural activities and community development initiatives.”

Following this main event, further Pela Daleh observances will be held at the longhouses of Uma Badeng, Uma Nyaving, Uma Apan, Uma Sambop Long Semutut, Uma Sambop Batu Pilau and Rh Kejaman Lasah, to ensure the traditions of each individual community are fully observed.

The project involves the construction of double circuit 275kV overhead transmission lines connecting Bakun and the Murum Junction, covering approximately 21.2km. Since construction commenced in December 2025, the project has reached an overall progress rate of 8.64% as of March 2026. This initial phase has primarily focused on engineering works, easement clearing and comprehensive soil investigations, with the project on track for a targeted completion by November 2027.

The transmission network enhancement plays an important role in strengthening grid resilience in the central region by improving system stability and reducing the risk of large-scale supply disruptions. The increased capacity ensures the 2,520MW generated by the Bakun Hydroelectric Plant is delivered even more efficiently, supporting the continued and optimal use of Sarawak’s renewable energy resources as demand grows.

Sarawak Energy will continue to engage closely with local communities and relevant authorities throughout the project’s implementation, ensuring effective coordination and clear communication at every stage, while investing in initiatives that support community development and long-term well-being.

The company remains focused on delivering reliable, affordable and sustainable energy through development that honours local traditions and contributes positively to the long-term well-being of the communities it serves.
