Sarawak-Singapore Interconnection Project Receives Conditional Approval From Energy Market Authority of Singapore to Proceed to Next Phase

The Sarawak-Singapore Interconnection Project secured a Conditional Approval (CA) from the Energy Market Authority of Singapore (EMA) today, a significant milestone towards improving broader energy security prospects and enhancing economic integration between neighbouring nations in the spirit of ASEAN.
With the issuance of the CA, the Sarawak-Singapore Interconnection Project is recognised to have been preliminary assessed to be technically and commercially viable and ready to move on to the next phase of obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals and licenses for further development of the project.
The CA granted by EMA is to a Consortium comprising Sarawak Energy and Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd is to export around 1GW of renewable energy from Sarawak to Singapore, with flow expected to commence around 2035 or earlier.
In a handing over ceremony, Mr Eugene Toh, EMA Assistant Chief Executive & Chief Commercial Officer, presented the Letter of Conditional Approval to The Honourable Datuk Haji Ibrahim Haji Baki, Chairman of Sarawak Energy who is also Deputy Minister for Utility (Sarawak Energy and PETROS) Sarawak and Mr Wong Kim Yin, Group Chief Executive Officer Sembcorp Industries Ltd.
This was witnessed by His Excellency Mr Gan Kim Yong, Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry and The Right Honourable Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, the Premier of Sarawak. Also present were The Honourable Dato Sri Haji Julaihi Haji Narawi, Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak; The Honourable Datuk Amar Haji Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Sarawak State Secretary and Sarawak Energy Board Member; Tan Sri Datuk Amar Haji Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani, Sarawak Energy Board Member and relevant Sarawak Heads of Department along with Sarawak Energy representatives Alvin Lim, Singapore Interconnection Project Lead and Hajah Siti Aisah Adenan, Senior Vice President, Corporate Services.
Commenting on the CA issuance by EMA, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari said: “Sarawak is pleased with this positive development on the Sarawak-Singapore Project. The project offers significant value in supporting Malaysia’s pursuit of the development and operation of a wider ASEAN Power Grid. Sarawak is also supporting the development of the Borneo Grid, having established a cross-border connection with West Kalimantan, Indonesia in 2016. Building on this success, we are now working to establish new interconnections with Sabah and Brunei Darussalam to cater to regional energy needs.
Meanwhile, Datuk Haji Ibrahim said: “Multiple interconnections with abundant renewable energy resources, presents an excellent opportunity to initiate multilateral energy trading. Sarawak Energy is committed to respectfully collaborate and work with partners across Borneo and the broader ASEAN community to pursue and advocate the development of interconnections with the common objectives on achieving energy security, shared prosperity and delivering energy transition targets.
