Sarawak Energy Disposes Seized Equipment as Part of Ongoing Crackdown on Power Theft
MIRI
31 JULY 2025
Sarawak Energy, through its operations and retail arm Syarikat SESCO Berhad (SESCO), continues to strengthen enforcement against electricity theft with the recent disposal of confiscated cryptocurrency mining equipment in Miri.
A destruction exercise was carried out at SESCO’s Miri Regional Office in late June, under the directive of the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication (MUT) Sarawak and by order of the Magistrate Court of Miri. A total of 191 items were destroyed, including cryptocurrency mining machines, laptops, modems and electrical appliances, with an estimated value of RM305,000. These items had been confiscated during earlier operations aimed at curbing illegal electricity use linked to cryptocurrency mining.
Representatives from MUT, the State Attorney-General’s Chambers (SAGC) and SESCO’s enforcement team witnessed the exercise.
Although Sarawak offers one of the most competitive electricity tariffs in the region, power theft remains a problem, particularly in cryptocurrency mining. Illegal connections pose safety risks and can cause power disruptions that inconvenience surrounding households and businesses. These connections may trigger fires, damage electrical appliances and weaken overall system stability, resulting in broader losses that affect the community.
Sarawak Energy reminds the public that electricity theft is a criminal offence under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance. The company encourages anyone with information on suspicious activities to contact its Customer Care Centre at 1300-88-3111 or via email at customercare@sarawakenergy.com. All reports are treated with strict confidentiality.
