Sarawak Energy Awards Scholarships to 140 Students
KUCHING
28 AUGUST 2025
Sarawak Energy has awarded scholarships to 140 outstanding Sarawakian students through its annual Sarawak Energy Scholarship Programme, reaffirming the Company’s commitment to nurturing local talent and supporting Sarawak’s future development.
This year’s scholars were selected from a competitive pool of 1,756 applicants, assessed based on academic achievements, leadership qualities and co-curricular involvement. In line with Sarawak Energy’s inclusivity values, about 20% of recipients come from communities near Sarawak Energy’s projects and operations in Mukah, Bintulu, Kapit, Belaga, Baram and Lubok Antu.
“Moving forward, we will continue our commitment to powering young minds and enhance our education initiatives to enable top Sarawakian talents to pursue their ambitions regardless of their backgrounds,” said Sarawak Energy Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Haji Sharbini Suhaili, in his speech at the 2025 Scholarship Award Ceremony here.
He added that the programme plays a vital role in nurturing the next generation of engineers, scientists and innovators, particularly in STEM- related fields, both locally and abroad. Since its inception, Sarawak Energy has invested RM102 million in scholarships and bursaries, benefitting more than 1,300 young Sarawakians pursuing tertiary education locally and internationally.
Underscoring this commitment, the company doubled its annual scholarship allocation to RM16 million in 2022, introducing enhanced monthly and digital allowances to better meet students’ learning needs. The programme also places a strong emphasis on diversity, equity and inclusion, with continued efforts to increase opportunities for women in technical fields.
Complementing the scholarship initiative is Sarawak Energy’s Bursary Programme under the Early Bird Talent Scheme, introduced in 2019 to identify and support promising secondary school students. To date, the bursary has benefitted 781 students, with 89 new bursaries awarded in 2025 across 15 schools closely connected to the company’s projects. Each year, RM200,000 is allocated to assist students who excel academically and in co-curricular activities.
The Sarawak Energy Scholarship and Bursary Programmes are aligned with Sarawak’s aspiration to build a skilled talent pool to power the state’s growth. Sustained investment in education ensures that Sarawak develops a future-ready workforce equipped to support the energy sector and contribute to the wider economy under the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030.
