As part of ongoing efforts to enhance public safety and improve public facilities in rural areas, Sarawak Energy, in collaboration with the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) Malaysia, successfully completed Phase 8 of the Lampu Jalan Kampung (LJK) project on 10 March 2025.
Under this phase, a total of 2,595 streetlights were installed across 454 villages in Sarawak – including 517 LED units allocated by KKDW for the Samarahan Division – implemented and maintained by Sarawak Energy. The LJK project aims to improve safety and accessibility in rural areas, supporting local community, social and economic activities. Since the programme began in 2002, a total of 57,327 streetlights have been successfully installed across Sarawak.
To mark the official completion of Phase 8, a handover ceremony was held earlier today at Dewan Kampung Merdang Lumut, Kota Samarahan. Witnessed by The Honourable Dato Sri Haji Julaihi Haji Narawi, Minister for Utility and Telecommunication (MUT) Sarawak, the event saw the symbolic handover of streetlights from KKDW, represented by The Honourable Datuk Hajah Rubiah Wang, Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development and Member of Parliament for Kota Samarahan, to Sarawak Energy, represented by Nazry Haji Abdul Latip, General Manager for Rural Electrification.
Also present were The Honourable Datuk Hamzah Brahim, Assemblyman for Stakan; Datu Jafri Lias, Permanent Secretary for MUT; Hajah Siti Aisah Adenan, Sarawak Energy’s Senior Vice President for Corporate Services; along with other officials; community leaders and local residents.
In his speech, The Honourable Dato Sri Haji Julaihi reiterated the Sarawak Government’s commitment to improving rural infrastructure and expanding access to essential services, acknowledging the strong cooperation between the Sarawak and Federal Governments in delivering this initiative for the benefit of rural communities.
Highlighting that the LJK project is a key Federal Government initiative, the Honourable Datuk Hajah Rubiah said that such projects play a strategic role in advancing rural development. She also noted that proper lighting along village access roads is of high important for public safety.
The LJK project adopts energy-efficient LED technology that helps reduce carbon emissions while providing reliable lighting, in line with Sarawak Energy’s focus on sustainable energy solutions and environmental responsibility.
Sarawak Energy remains committed to achieving full rural electrification and improving the quality of life in remote communities. This supports Sarawak’s vision for statewide electricity coverage under the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
Guided by MUT Sarawak, the company continues to implement the Sarawak Accelerated Rural Electrification Masterplan through key initiatives such as the Rural Electrification Scheme (RES); Rural Power Supply Scheme (RPSS); Additional Late Application Fund (ALAF); and the Sarawak Alternative Rural Electrification Scheme (SARES).
Through ongoing collaboration and focused implementation, Sarawak Energy continues to deliver reliable and affordable energy to communities, homes and businesses, helping to bridge the urban-rural divide and supporting Sarawak’s long-term development goals.
